Training Day

By | News and Updates, Swaziland | One Comment

We have arrived safely in Gainesville, GA! We have two weeks of missionary training here before heading to Swaziland. We haven’t done much training yet as today was our first day, but we did get a tour around the Adventures in Missions headquarters and learned about many of their programs. The training and class schedule looks well thought out and we’re looking forward to the sections on leading from our strengths and conflict resolution (handy in or out of the mission field!) It should be a great couple of weeks. During the weekends, we get to visit with my sister Sheryl and her husband Dave, since they live just an hour away from here. “Here” is a cute vacation home on Lake Lanier that a generous family is donating to us during our time here. We are hoping to go fishing at the dock just a few hundred feet from our back porch. Both Brandon and I haven’t fished since we were kids- it’ll be exciting if we get to reel something in! Cheers for now! grace and peace, Melinda

The Light at the End of the Tunnel!

By | News and Updates, Personal Reflections | One Comment

We are so pleased to report that we are 89% fundraised for our monthly expenses and 100% for our startup funds! That means that if 20 friends supported us $25/month or only five at $100/month, we will be at 100% across the board! Would you consider helping us reach our goal with a monthly pledge? (or find out more about what we will be doing in Swaziland on our support page) God has been so faithful through this process, so we have no doubt we will meet our goal by the end of the month, even though it is less than two weeks away. Today and tomorrow, our home church, Capital, will be introducing us at all services to help us finish this fundraising strong. If we do meet our goal by September 30, we will be heading to Georgia for training the last two weeks of October, and will be on the ground in Swaziland the first week of November. Crazy! Thank you friends and family, for your support, encouragement and prayers. We would ask for your continued prayer for these next two weeks as we not only wrap up our fundraising, but also tackle logistics. Next week, Brandon and both our moms will be taking a road trip to Ohio to load some of our personal things on the shipping container which also brings much of the food for the Carepoints. I will be staying home with Zach to make travel easier for the others. Speaking of the little guy-…

Our Crazy Summer – Mission Fundraising Update

By | Friends and Family, Life and Faith, News and Updates | No Comments

This summer has been a primer in “How to live a Crazy Life.” Zach went on his first plane flight with us for a family reunion on the west coast, and a few weeks later, his second plane flight, but to the opposite coast for another family reunion. He has started to master sitting and solid foods. We gave our first fundraising presentation at a church and this last weekend, we moved in with my fabulous in-laws so that whenever we are fully funded for Swaziland, we can just go. We sanded and painted the deck the last two days of the move. During all of this, Brandon has been working full-time and I’ve been taking care of our little one (who still wakes up 3-4 times a night- it’s a good thing he’s such a joy and blessing) For many folks, these might be normal events and milestones, but the space of time we’ve experienced all of this in made it simply exhausting. The most notable craziness has been the move. We are renting out our home, so many of our belongings could be moved into our unfinished basement. I know, it sounds simple, but we wanted to take the opportunity to purge and organize. We sorted our entire home into categories: Trash, Goodwill, Take to Swaziland, Long-Term Storage, Airbnb Usables (in case our renter moves out before we move back), Give to Friends, Mom, and Leave for Renter (Brandon’s sister). By the end, my brain was burnt out…
